Alright, it’s been out for a while, but I’ve failed to take the time to say anything about it. The secret, or not so secret is Software Virtulization!
Altiris® Software Virtualization SolutionTM (SVS) is a completely new way to use software. By placing applications and data into managed units called virtual software packages (VSP’s), SVS allows you to instantly activate, deactivate or reset applications and to completely avoid conflicts between applications, without altering the base Windows installation. Say goodbye to “DLL Hell” and “Registry Rot” forever!
Getting apps and data into VSP’s is simple with an included tool.
The personal version is the same as the regular commercial product shipped by Altiris, minus the server-side components for centralized management. The best part is, SVS is free to you for personal use!
This may sound complicated, but it really is fairly simple. At the very least, you owe it to yourself to play with it for a bit. I’ve personally found SVS very well for resetting a failed application or just clearing up conflicts on my systems. You can read plenty more about it from the main page: http://www.altiris.com/Products/SoftwareVirtualizationSolution.aspx
In addition, you could save yourself even more work by visiting SVSDownloads, a site dedicated to providing free VSA’s. There are plenty already created, and more on their way each day. These are prepackaged and ready to run for your convenience, wow – it couldn’t become much easier!
Note: When using SVS, it is important that you understand how data files are handled. Otherwise you may inadvertently lose data. Please take a minute to read this documentation.
Top Eight Reasons You should Incorporate SVS in Your Home:
- Eliminate Application Conflicts (run multiple versions or older generation apps)
- Instantly Repair Damaged Applications (after your kids use your computer, or you make that really cool ‘tweak’)
- There are many VSA’s created already for you at SVSDownloads (means you can be lazy)
- Retake Control of Your Apps when Trouble Arises (stop wasting time troubleshooting)
- Significantly Reduce your Troubleshooting Time (see number four)
- On Demand Provisioning (turn apps on or off with a click of a button)
- Quickly Migrate to New or Secondary Computer (applications are not computer specific and thereby mobile)
- It’s Free for Personal Use (the best reason of all)

[…] Okay, so there has to be a downside – right? The only “downside” might be the fact that its free for 30 days then they ask you pay a one time fee of $34 to support the application. Might not be a bad price to support a few guys who made a sweet app. Thirty days will fly by, have I ever introduced you to Software Virtualization? It may well solve your 30 day problem – but of course, I’ll leave that up to you. […]
